philanthropy programs   Engaging youth
as grantseekers and grantmakers is essential to building a youth-centered community. YLI works with young people and their adult allies, community foundations and other grantmaking institutions, community-based organizations, and public agencies to create new opportunities for young people to participate in youth philanthropy.

Over the years, YLI's youth philanthropy programs have benefited youth, adults and communities by creating new ways for young people to promote social change by directing resources to those priorities:

  • Trained and assisted more than 500 youth grantmakers and 250 adult allies.
  • Led establishment of a legislated annual earmark of close to $1 million from the City of San Francisco, exclusively for youth-led efforts.
  • Trained and supported creation of 15 youth philanthropy programs and endowments at community foundations and other organizations.
  • Established the Philanthropy Learning Network, connecting youth and adult philanthropists for mentoring and collaborative grantmaking.
  • Trained and created opportunities for youth to award $1.25 million in grants to over 300 youth-led projects, which in turn have engaged thousands of youth and adults.

YLI will soon launch a new youth philanthropy project. Sign up for the YLI e-Bulletin for updates.
