As a youth journalism mentor, Michael teaches how to produce mini-documentaries, in-depth print stories, podcasts, and innovative social media storytelling.
Michael began his storytelling career as a news contributor at Cal State Long Beach writing on immigration and homelessness. He became a Youth Reporter intern with VoiceWaves in 2013. After being hired as a staff reporter for two years, he was promoted to lead the program in 2016, overseeing story production, multimedia trainings for Youth Reporters, communications, partnerships, and more. His works have been syndicated on national sites including Mother Jones, New America Media, and ImpreMedia, the nation’s largest Spanish-language news publisher. His video profile on Long Beach Dreamers was screened at the Latino Film Festival.
More recently, he published an in-depth fellowship piece with UCLA’s LENS project, highlighting issues with tribal inclusion in Los Angeles River redevelopments.
