Tobacco Use Reduction Force (TURF)
Taking our TURF back!

Who is TURF?
  • The TURF project is a prevention youth council whose main goal is developing a land-use policy that would limit the number of tobacco retailers and reduce youth smoking citywide in San Francisco.

How does TURF help?
  • TURF works with other community based organizations in communities that face a high number of tobacco retailers. TURF provides these organizations with trainings that build the capacity for them to develop a policy to change the built environment resulting in positive public health.
Why is Land-Use policy so important to public health?
  • Every Land Use decision has human health consequences.
  • Land-Use Policy can change the way land is used promoting healthier communities resulting in healthier people.
  • Advocacy for this issue is important because it creates positive long-term sustainable change in the community.
Why is tobacco a Social Justice Issue?
  • The Tobacco Industry aggressively targets young people, people of color, low-income communities and minority communities.
  • Tobacco Retail outlets are disproportionately located in neighborhoods affected by social and economic disadvantage.
  • TURF research clearly shows that in communities with more tobacco retailers there are higher youth smoking rates.
