THIS JUST IN! Our youth leaders just joined the signing ceremony where San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee signed into law raising the age for tobacco sales to 21!

This legislation makes San Francisco the second major city – after New York – to raise the age to purchase tobacco from 18 to 21. San Francisco has a long history of passing legislation geared towards curbing smoking. In the last 10 years, it banned smoking in restaurants, bars, playgrounds, parks, and taxis; on public transit vehicles, wharves, docks and athletic fields; and at bus stops, golf courses and charity bingo games.

Earlier this week, youth from our Community Action Model released this video about their research project to reduce the impact of tobacco in their communities. ‪#‎SFTobaccofree‬ all the way!

Since 1995, the Community Action Model (CAM) has been an integral part of the San Francisco’s Tobacco Free Project’s strategy for tobacco control: 59 projects and over 41 Policy- System Environmental-level changes have been accomplished to improve health in San Francisco.

Projects follow the Community Action Model’s five-step capacity building and community organizing process with the goal of simultaneously developing local community and youth leaders and creating policy-system and environmental level change to reduce tobacco influence and use and promote health in San Francisco, especially among communities targeted by the Tobacco industry.
