In an effort to highlight the public transportation work that youth leaders throughout San Mateo County have led, we want to spotlight Jennifer Franco from South San Francisco High.
Jennifer is currently a junior, and works part-time. For Jennifer, âpublic transportation plays a huge role in how people get around on a daily basis.â Jennifer depends on public transportation to get to school, activities during her free time, and speaks on how her family depends on public transportation to get to work every day.
For youth, Jennifer recognized that “public transportation is a great opportunity in the Bay Area to get exposed to our diverse surroundings and helps us travel to our destinations, especially when youth do not have access to a car.”
This San Mateo youth group is working hard to improve transportation options in their community.
To further improve the lives of transit-dependent populations in San Mateo County, Jennifer encourages public transit advocates to consider having more corresponding times with school bell schedules in order for students to not have to run late to work or walk an extra mile to access their public transit mode.
It is the perfect time to invest and take interest in public transportation.

For the past year, local Youth Leadership Institute leaders in South San Francisco and Half Moon Bay have built their capacity to understand public transportation not only in their communities, but regionally in the Bay Area.
After a summer of data collection, including collecting travel diaries that will launch a storytelling series, conducting focus groups in South San Francisco High and Pilarcitos High, and surveying South San Francisco and Half Moon Bay youth, youth leaders are ready to unveil the findings and recommendations for this project at this event.
Additionally, our main goal for this event is to begin to build strong partnerships to lead and expand public transportation efforts in San Mateo County.
