Meet LOUGHLIN BROWNE

Calafia Fellow ~ Marin County, California

Loughlin Catherine Browne was born in Manhattan in 2003 and lives in Marin County, CA.

At school, she loves writing for her school newspaper. Her favorite subjects include English and History. This is Loughlin’s second year on the Calafia team. Her personal interests include being a fan of many great artists of today, such as: The Internet, Daisy, Frank Ocean, Anderson PAAK, and Tame Impala. Her love of music goes as far as being a musician herself. She knows how to play piano and also enjoys writing her own music.

Loughlin’s plan for her future is to finish her final year of high school strong and apply for many great colleges to study political science so that she can make a difference in this country. After she graduates with her undergraduate degree, she plans to apply and attend law school. After her years of school, she sees herself involved in politics.

Did you know, Loughlin also speaks Spanish pretty well? In fact, if she could be anywhere right now, she would be in Spain practicing her Spanish. She would probably pick up Catalan pretty quick as well!

Loughlin’s Social Justice Tagline:

Growing up as part of the queer community with a queer parent, Love is Love is an important value in her life. Her mother is bisexual, and there is stigma around that identity even within the queer community. “Society often forces a narrative on gay youth and having a queer parent, and at first I wanted to avoid being at the forefront of that stereotype, but now I unapologetically embrace it.”

Calafia is yli’s statewide youth policy journal, which amplifies the narratives of young people on topics and issue areas important to them and their communities. Each year, a Calafia Fellow is selected from each of yli’s seven office to identify the issue’s theme and write the stories. Along the way, they are mentored by experienced reporters, travel to statewide and national media conferences, and learn the steps to producing a printed publication.

Stay tuned for this year’s pub!
