Second-hand smoke is now the 3rd leading cause of preventable death, with over 41,000 deaths in the US each year. In partnership with the Los Angeles County Public Health Department and other agencies across LA County, yli is working to protect communities from the adverse impacts of tobacco. The program engages a range of strategies addressing tobacco retail licensing, exposure to secondhand smoke, exploring full tobacco sale bans, flavors/methods bans, vaping devices and more.
In Santa Monica and Gardena, youth are actively engaged in community campaigns aimed at achieving greater health equity in their neighborhoods. By leveraging storytelling and advocacy, these youth coalitions are developing leadership skills, mastering community-based research techniques, and utilizing multimedia storytelling to advance tobacco prevention efforts.
