“Taking Back our Billboards” Press Conference
- This event has passed.
March 11, 2019 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm
A survey conducted earlier this year by YLI and Roosevelt High School FNL revealed that 80% of young
people report they have not used alcohol in the past 30 days. This survey showed that 58% of youth see at
least 1 alcohol advertisements each day, 23% have received alcohol from parents, and 35% have had
access from other adults they know.
Roosevelt High School FNL youth leaders hope to educate the community about underage drinking rates
and true youth drinking norms: “80% of Roosevelt students have not used alcohol in the past 30 days.”
They also to empower and encourage youth in the community to be proud about the healthy choices they are
already making. The Roosevelt FNL Chapter will be unveiling one of the two billboard ads they designed
in partnership with Outfront Media to celebrate the healthy choices Roosevelt students are making over
alcohol.
Youth leaders will have a call-to-action at the conclusion of the press conference to educate families
through the Not on My Watch (NOMW) Campaign, a countywide movement which aims to reduce
underage access to alcohol by empowering families to institute a family alcohol policy and put up a lawn
sign in front of their house stating they will not support or supply alcohol to minors in their home. Fresno
County will be joining over 50 counties in the state of California who implement the Friday Night Live
Program to take a stand to ensure underage drinking and all of its negative consequences will not happen
“on our watch.”
