Sonia grew up in Marin County, and currently attends College of Marin where she’s majoring in political science. Sonia is extremely passionate about advocacy, especially for underrepresented groups. Her passion for advocacy and social justice are rooted in her experiences dealing with racism as well as other socio-economic challenges in Marin County.
Prior to joining yli as a staff member, Sonia served on the Marin County Youth Commission on the Racial Equity sub-committee. Within this subcommittee, she created and implemented curricula on race relations in Marin County schools. Sonia also served as the lead ambassador for the Marin Teen Girl Conference, chair of the Youth Advisory Council, president of Tamalpais Model United Nations, assistant director for the National High School Model United Nations Conference, and a panelist for Being Adept.
Currently, Sonia coordinates 2 school based programs at San Jose Middle School, Sinaloa Middle School, and the Virtual Learning Academy. She also serves as one of the adult allies for the Marin County Youth Commission subcommittees, alongside all of the yli Marin staff.
Outside of work and school, Sonia loves listening to music, going to concerts, and film photography!
