What is this bill about?
AB 1537 prohibits local and state law enforcement officers from engaging in any form of secondary employment or volunteering for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (“ICE”), the Department of Homeland Security, their contractors, or any entity that assists with or engages in federal immigration enforcement.
How does it align with yli’s values?
Congress has appropriated $75 billion of our tax dollars to ICE over four years for mass deportations, and the federal administration desperately wants more ICE agents abducting our neighbors from the streets and harming members of the public across California. ICE is spending millions on ads in an attempt to recruit local police, including advertising campaigns in California markets.
AB 1537 offers a clear and practical solution: preventing local and state law enforcement officers from clocking in to a second job with ICE – an agency that is terrorizing communities across the country, tearing families apart, and operating with no accountability.
yli partners with thousands of youth across the state, the majority of whom are low-income youth of color. We have witnessed first hand how they are consistently targeted by the State, and allowing law enforcement to take side jobs with ICE will only expand their ability to racially profile and attack our youth and communities. We are staunch advocates of measures that will reduce the criminalization, incarceration and deportation of our loved ones.
This policy aligns with our Racial Justice Platform, which addresses the impacts of criminalization on communities of color.
