AB 908 – LGBTQ + Inclusion and Fair Treatment in Schools (LIFT) Act

What is this bill about?

AB 908 ensures that school districts fulfill their legal obligation to include LGBTQ+ people and other historically marginalized groups in history and social science textbooks and curricula, fostering safe, inclusive learning environments for all California youth.

How does it align with yli’s values?

The FAIR Education Act mandates that California schools provide LGBTQ+ inclusive curriculum and textbooks. Specifically, social science instruction must include the early history of California and the roles and contributions of people of all genders, Native Americans, African Americans, Latino Americans, Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, European Americans, LGBTQ+ Americans, persons with disabilities, and other historically marginalized groups. This law was intended to create a more accurate, diverse, and inclusive education that fosters understanding and acceptance in our schools.

However, more than a decade after its passage, implementation remains inconsistent across the state. Equality California’s 2024 Safe Schools Report Card found that only 37% of surveyed school districts have fully adopted compliant instructional materials.

yli partners with thousands of youth across the state, the majority of whom are low-income youth of color. Our youth depend on us to pass policies like AB 908, which enforce the state’s commitment to inclusive curriculum and ensure that every student receives the education they deserve.

This policy aligns with our Education Justice Platform, which advocates for free, high quality, inclusive education for all.
