What is this bill about?
AB 2701 would establish an unnecessary and harmful domestic violence registry, negatively impacting survivors.
Why doesn’t it align with yli’s values?
While the intention of a domestic violence registry is to list domestic violence offenders, unfortunately, we know that many survivors of domestic violence would be listed in such a registry. Studies show that most women in detention centers have experienced intimate partner violence, and their abuse is often related to why they were incarcerated. A related fear is that a registry would be particularly dangerous for immigrant survivors and their families, and would facilitate the targeting of these individuals by immigration enforcement.
yli partners with thousands of youth across the state, the majority of whom are low-income youth of color. We witness first hand the brutal impacts of our state’s harmful “justice” system on their lives, and are staunchly opposed to ineffective policies that criminalize our communities.
Our decision to oppose aligns with our Racial Justice Platform, which addresses the impacts of the carceral system on communities of color.
