OPPOSE: SB 1181 – Policing Central Valley Schools

What is this bill about?

SB 1181 would establish a pilot program increasing law enforcement presence at public schools in the Central Valley through coordinating and sharing sensitive information of children and youth with Fusion Centers.

Why doesn’t it align with yli’s values?

California is home to six Fusion Centers, which are state and locally owned and operated data-sharing hubs that collect, analyze, and distribute massive amounts of highly personal information about ordinary people, without meaningful oversight or accountability. Fusion Centers threaten the privacy and civil rights of Californians by giving federal and out-of-state agencies, including ICE, our personal information, including our location, identity, biometrics, and social media activity, without our consent and without regard to local and state laws.

SB 1181 would increase collaboration with these state surveillance centers, which would lead to sensitive student information entering government databases that are used by federal law enforcement and immigration authorities.

yli partners with thousands of youth across the state, the majority of whom are low-income youth of color. We witness first hand the impacts of our state’s harmful “justice” system on their lives, and are staunchly opposed to policies that will increase the surveillance, criminalization, incarceration and deportation of our loved ones.

Our decision to oppose aligns with our Racial Justice Platform, which addresses the impacts of the carceral system on communities of color.
