What is this proposition about?
While we believe everyone should have an equal chance to succeed, the reality is women in California are paid less than 80 cents for every dollar a white man makes – and women of color even less. With Black, Latino, and Native American people dying disproportionately from COVID-19, we’re seeing the devastating consequences of decades of discrimination in education, housing, jobs, health care, and more.
By passing Proposition 16, we can take a step toward dismantling structural racism and sexism.
In states that allow affirmative action, women and people of color compete on equal footing for state contracts. But right now, California is one of just nine states that bans affirmative action. Proposition 16 is our chance to change that. It gives us the tools to fight discrimination, without quotas, so we can take a step towards equal opportunity for all families in California.
