Protecting Free Speech & Immigrants’ Rights at UC

What is this letter about?

This letter calls on the Regents of the University of California to take immediate action to protect our community from attacks by the Trump Administration targeting free speech and immigrants’ rights.

How does it align with yli’s values?

On March 8th, former Columbia University graduate student and legal permanent resident Mahmoud Khalil was abducted from his home in New York. Columbia University’s response has been a portrait of cowardice, helping the administration to target pro-Palestine organizers, attempting to weaponize anti-Palestinian racism and Islamophobia to open the door to authoritarian attacks on their political enemies.

This is a moment for the University of California to make a clear choice to stand on the side of intellectual freedom and justice. Not only is compliance with this regime’s racist and unconstitutional demands immoral and inhumane. Compliance will not save us. We cannot sacrifice vulnerable people for the slim chance of benevolence from a regime determined to dismantle higher education and enact its white supremacist agenda.

For over 3 decades, yli has worked alongside thousands of youth to amplify their voices and implement their solutions for meaningful community change. We stand in solidarity with UC faculty, staff, and learners in calling on the UC to protect freedom of speech and our immigrant communities.

This letter aligns with our Education Justice Platform.
