YO MATEO! sought a policy solution to address youth access to tobacco in the retail environment. With the experiences and data gathered from attempted purchase surveys and public opinion surveys, YO MATEO! partnered with the San Mateo County Tobacco Education Coalition in leading a countywide campaign, “Stop Tobacco Sales to Youth!” They advocated for the reauthorization and strengthening of the County’s sun setting tobacco retailer permit and saw the passage of a stronger ordinance that would license tobacco retailers with stricter provisions and a commitment by County officials to enforce the new ordinance.
