Many city sports require some kind of fee for participation – registration, equipment, facilities. This makes sports inaccessible to those youth who could most benefit from participating in these kinds of programs. In June of 2019, Merced youth successfully campaigned for $5,000 in youth sports vouchers to cover these fees for low-income youth. In June of 2021, they secured another $8,500, making sure that the opportunity to participate in sports is equitable for all youth.
