The Play Fair Coalition made history in the fair industry by changing the title sponsor of the Marin County Fair and replacing the 6-year sponsor, Miller Brewing.
The Play Fair Coalition includes the Marin Community Foundation, the Marin Insitute, the Marin County Department of Health and Human Services, Bay Area Community Resources, and the Youth Leadership Institute. The coalition responded to concerns that the brewer’s sponsorship promotes underage drinking. Community members were concerned because state health statistics show that in Marin County the number of youth who drink is nearly twice the national average and 10 percent higher than the rest of California. Binge drinking rates for teens and adults are also higher than in other areas of the state.
