Suspending Alcohol Licenses of Outlets Endangering Public Health

What is this rule about?

The California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) has proposed an emergency rule that would allow them to issue immediate temporary suspensions of the licenses of any alcohol outlet engaging in gross violation of public health and safety. This is a direct response to alcohol licensees refusing to close or limit their businesses to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

yli’s only criticism would be that this prompt suspension should always be used against licensees who put patrons and community members in danger – even after the pandemic has been addressed.

How does it align with yli’s values?

Improving the public health of our communities benefits us all. yli has worked on health equity for over 27 years in the Bay Area, Central Valley, and in Southern California. Our efforts aim to engage youth in the health equity conversations in their communities, specifically how messages, access, policies, and social norms around alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs affect their environment.

What is yli doing about it?

We have just signed and sent a letter of support to the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. And, we are voicing our support on social media: Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Who else has endorsed this rule?
