A dry lakebed, dead fish, abandoned buildings – these are the images most often associated with the Salton Sea. Less known is the story of the people living near the sea and what the worsening environmental crisis means to them.
Seven young women across California engaged in yli’s Calafia fellowship to produce a magazine centering on Intersectional Feminism. The stories, each written by the young writers, take on issues such as: Street harassment, gender norms, beauty and identity, queer issues, women’s history in classrooms, women farmers, and more.
When I first started facilitating, I felt really impatient. Since I had not been in a high school setting in a long time, I had forgotten what it looked and felt like. I had also forgotten how shy young people can be, and how much time it takes for them to open up.
But students don’t always want to spend their recreational time outside. They wanted an indoor option where they didn’t have to be quiet, but could talk and socialize. And that is how the idea of a student Lounge was created.
The effects of environmental and climate catastrophe are devastating communities on a global scale. Right here in the Central Valley we can feel our summers getting hotter, we taste our water becoming unsafe or scarce altogether, and we see our politicians continuing to collect major dollars from the fossil fuel industry.
Last week, BLING grantmakers distributed $65,000 to 13 youth-led projects addressing issues that face San Francisco youth, such as sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, ageism, homelessness, and more.
On April 3rd, approximately 5 young people will be officially sworn-in to serve on the very first term of the newly established City-Wide Youth Commission. This is an historic moment in the history of the City of Madera, demonstrating City Hall’s commitment to including youth at the decision-making table.
