Salem grew up in Indian Trail, North Carolina. She graduated from Queens University of Charlotte with a B.A. in Political Science. While attending Queens University, Salem served as the president of the Black Student Union, where she managed club events, wrote calls to action, and led efforts to inform the students on topics important to the Black community. Salem’s passion for social justice comes from her grandfather, who often recounts his experiences participating in civil rights demonstrations. Before moving to California, Salem was a member of several activist groups such as the Charlotte Reproductive Rights Coalition, Charlotte Animal Activists, and an underground migrant assistance coalition.
At yli, Salem leads a Club Live chapter at Davidson Middle School where she partners with students to educate their peers about underage substance use prevention and promote healthy habits. Salem also leads Marin Organizing for Racial Equity (MORE), a program for BIPOC youth and their allies to address racial inequity issues in Marin.
In her free time, Salem enjoys reading, honing in on her skateboarding skills, and spending time outside on sunny days.
